Parade of Echoes: The Wooden Boat Building School

Brooklin, Maine

Professor: Julian Geltman

Studio 03 | Fall 2023

Expanding the Wooden Boat Building School in Brooklin, Maine, the “Parade of Echoes” addition honors Maine’s boat building heritage. As an educational facility, it exhibits 5 common Maine and New England roof styles. Its elevated design mirrors the state’s wharfs, extending toward the water as a nod to boat construction.

Inspired by Maine’s handmade wooden boat building methods, the design is deeply connected to the waterfront. Featuring various roof types and an exterior boardwalk, it seamlessly integrates with its surroundings while minimizing its impact on the land. Inside, thermal zones act as connectors and improve insulation.

Supported by a robust post and beam system with over one hundred concrete footings and steel bracing, the structure is both resilient and adaptable. The layout of large columns creates a distinct structural line, defining spaces and circulation paths. This grid system reflects functionality and aesthetics while providing programmatic needs of the school.
